Policies
Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
Interlibrary Loan is permitted to print format (but not electronically). Single copies of individual articles may be reproduced for distribution without charge to individual libraries of not-for-profit, non-commercial organizations in accordance with fair usage guidelines. Author reprints, commercial reprints and single issue sales in print may be purchased in lieu of ILL. For further information, please see reprints and permissions.
Use of Licensed Material
Academic institutions – teaching staff may reproduce individual articles from licensed material for distribution to students accredited to the Licensee.
Corporate and government institutions – authorized users may print and/or download individual articles and other individual items from searches of the licensed content for research and regulatory purposes in the furtherance of the Licensee’s business.
Post-cancellation
ASME’s post-cancellation policy ensures institutional customers can retain access to all licensed material upon cancellation of the license agreement. It is applicable to all institutional customers with a signed license agreement. Access is subject to payment of an annual access fee.
The access fee supports the costs of hosting content and related customer service. Access fees do not apply to customers with a current license to the relevant publications.
License Agreements
ASME’s license agreement is a legal document protecting the rights of our customers and ASME. Every customer is required to sign a license agreement at the start of their license. Addendums may be used to add additional publications to an agreement or to extend the license period, or when policy changes are required.
ASME’s license agreement includes terms requested by libraries from the academic, corporate and government sectors. Agreements have been developed to protect the rights of our customers and to grant rights to use content in ways specific to an electronic resource and closest to traditional print usage.
The license agreement outlines the contract details, including:
- Licensed material – the publications licensed by the customer
- License details – the identified Institutional Administrator and targeted IP range
- Supply period – the start and end dates of the site license access period
- License fee – the total price for access to all licensed material for the supply period
- Terms – the interpretation of the agreement, including usage rights and restrictions, terms and warranties and customer service
The Agreement must be signed by both parties
Current License Agreement can be found: https://www.asme.org/shop/journals/subscriptions
Consortia
ASME works with consortia of various types and sizes and welcomes discussion with all consortium managers.
A consortium should consist of at least five member institutions, with a single point of contact for negotiations. The consortium should sign one license agreement and pay through one invoice.
Each institution within the consortium will need to allocate an account administrator who is responsible for setting up the institution’s account and will receive any service communications. COUNTER-compliant usage statistics are provided for each institution. ASME now offers a consortia report based on COUNTER 3-compliant data.
If you have specific questions, please contact asmedigitalcollection@asme.org.
Pay-Per-View
Institutional customers have the option to purchase individual articles, referred to as “pay-per-view” to provide access to content not included in a site license. Full-text articles can be accessed on http://www.asmedigitalcollection.asme.org for seven days after purchase.
To purchase an article, simply click on the full-text or PDF version of the article. If you do not have a site license to that subscription or publication year, you will be presented with the option to purchase the article at the bottom of the page. Please note: you will need to register as a user of asme.org.
For customer support with your article purchase, email asmedigitalcollection@asme.org
Author reprints, commercial reprints and single issue sales are also available in print only. For further information, please see reprints and permissions.
