Abstract

The experimental and image processing technique presented here seeks to provide time accurate information on local temperature and gradient fluctuations. Thermochromic liquid crystals (TLC) are used to map instantaneous two dimensional temperature fields. The color response of the liquid crystals is tracked by a CCD camera. A synchronization circuit is designed to correlate the perceived color of two different bands of TLC with the thermocouple measured temperature. An XI1 based algorithm is then used to extract quantitative information from the transient video images. Results on a rotational flowfield are presented to show the utility of the technique.
