Abstract
Heating of the gas is an undesirable effect of the compression process, particularly in vacuum pumps and high pressure ratio reciprocating compressors. ‘Discharge gas cooling’ is analogous to the commonly known phenomenon of ‘suction gas heating’, but unlike the latter, discharge gas cooling is beneficial to the user of a vacuum pump. This paper describes a technique for modeling the complex heat transfer process by breaking it up in to different stages and calculating the heat transferred during each stage for estimating the discharge temperature. The method was validated by comparing the results with experimental data for a vacuum pump tested over a range of operating conditions.
