Abstract

Pelvic fractures occur in 8% to 14% of near-side automobile collisions (Cesari et al., 1980). The type of fracture varies widely and includes pubic rami, pubic symphysis, acetabuli, sacro-iliac joint, and iliac wing fractures. In the laboratory environment, fractures of the pubic rami have been reproduced in both full cadaver (Cavanaugh et al., 1990) and isolated pelvis studies (Guillemot et al., 1997). Recently, Molz and co-workers (1997) found acetabular fractures in their isolated pelvic experiments. However, the loading history and mechanical boundary conditions for the two experiments varied widely.
