Most papers dealing with insertion related-assembly consider mainly loose fit insertions, but in machine building industries nearly 25–35% insertion operations are force fit insertion and are mainly completed manually, some times with the aid of a press machine. In this paper decision making in developing a reconfigurable manufacturing center for performing force fit insertion is presented. A special force fit insertion end effector and a dual mode fixture are developed then combined with a machining center for performing force fit insertion automatically. Functional requirements generation and descision making for conceptual design are explained. A prototype is established, it can perform programmable force fit insertions successfully.
