The purpose of this paper is to outline a process for determining the viscoelastic mechanical properties of whale blubber for use in computer simulations to improve tracking tag designs. Tracking tags are attached to whales to determine migration paths and critical habitats. Tags are secured by implanting the sharp-tipped, barbed, metal cylinder externally through the skin and blubber layers.
