I am looking forward to this year's International Design Engineering Technical Conference, which occurs September 4–7 in Las Vegas, Nevada. It will be my last IDETC as Editor of JMD, and I look forward to thanking the many individuals who have made the past five years such an excellent experience.

They are, of course, our Associate Editors, who manage the review process. Their daily attention to the review of every paper, our Associate Editors ensure that the average time to a recommendation for JMD stays below six months.

However, I also look forward to thanking our authors, who have responded by increasing both the number and quality of their submissions. Their attention to our journal has resulted in an impact factor that places JMD in the top 10 of Mechanical Engineering Journals and among the top three journals published by ASME.

I am pleased to announce the addition of Prof. Hong-Sen Yan as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Mechanical Design.

Professor Hong-Sen Yan received his PhD from Purdue University in 1980. He previously served as an Associate Professor at National Cheng Kung University (Tainan), a Sr. Research Engineer at General Motor Research Laboratories (Michigan), an Associate Professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook (New York), and the Director-general of the National Science and Technology Museum (Kaohsiung). Currently, he is a Chair Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at National Cheng Kung University (Tainan, Taiwan). Dr. Yan's areas of interests are mechanism and machine design, and ancient Chinese machinery; and he collects ancient Chinese locks as a hobby.
